Who are Family Works?
Family Works provides a range of social services that support families and children. Our aim is to make Aotearoa New Zealand the best place in the world to grow up; a place where all children are safe, families are strong and communities are connected.
We work in a way that focuses on strengths, positive outcomes and giving people the skills to resolve problems themselves.
What is Family Works Resolution Services?
Family Works Resolution Service, also known as Family Disputes Resolution (FDR), is funded by the Ministry of Justice. It supports parents, guardians, family and whānau to reach out-of-court agreements about the care arrangements for their children.
The process involves parents and/or carers working with a qualified family mediator who will listen to all points of view and help the parties involved reach agreement.
The approach aims to reduce stress on families by avoiding, wherever possible, the delays, conflict and expense that court proceedings can entail. It also ensures the court – when it is needed – is focused on vulnerable people and more serious matters. For example, families where domestic violence is an issue.
Who can get help?
The Family Works Resolution Service is for parents and caregivers who are separating or separated and need to make arrangements to care for their children. The service helps you reach agreements that are in the best interests of your family, without the time, expense and stress of going to court.
How much does it cost?
If you’re on a low to middle income, the service is likely to be free.
Even if you’re not eligible for the fully funded service, the cost is subsidised and will never cost more than $450 per person - much less than the cost of filing an application at the Family Court.
