Stay On Track By Avoiding Critical Bolting Failures
Incorporated in 1943, the "North Bar Tool Company" became the first company in Britain to commercially manufacture torque wrenches. The initial demand was driven by the need for the gasket-less cylinder head of the Rolls Royce Merlin engine to be accurately tightened. Bill Brodey and his partner Ernest Thornitt obtained a licence from Britain's wartime Government to begin manufacture of torque wrenches and Norbar was born.
Ever since Norbar has been committed to serving the bolting needs of critical industry and the Rail industry is no exception, with a range of products ideally suited for the industry.
One such product range is the EvoTorque Battery Tool (EBT) which following a rigorous testing process gained Network Rail approval for use across the UK’s rail network infrastructure. The models covered by the approval have torque capacities of 200 N∙m to 4000 N∙m.
Network Rail approval ensures that the Norbar EBT meets the exacting standards required for use on rail applications; that these products are safe, reliable and will enhance maintenance tasks on the UK’s rail infrastructure.
case Study:
Boltstress Ultrasonics were awarded the job of removing and reinstalling several bolted joint locations of rail car dumper rails and tracks. This involved the loosening, replacement and re-installation of over 3000 bolts. Due to the repeated number of tightening and loosening operations, approximately 24,000 actions were completed.
Boltstress Ultrasonics, chose the Norbar EBT on the basis it performs flawlessly in a manner of demanding environments. Additionally, Boltstress Ultrasonics had specific qualifying criteria the tool needed to meet, including for it to be transducerised, to be able to collect and record torque and angle data, to have a reliable and proven robust gearbox assembly and battery performance which could sustain a large quantity of repetitive, successive bolting operations.

The on-board transducer meant every bolt had precisely the right amount of torque applied – this was verified by the Boltstress Ultrasonics instruments. Data management provided hard evidence of applied torque – streamed in real-time to the QA department.
Engineer to order (ETO) service:
Whilst Norbar produce an extensive range of standard equipment there are times when something outside the standard range is required. Norbar’s ETO service is the answer for these more specific requirements.
As an ISO 9001 company, Norbar both design and manufacture special equipment to meet customer specifications. These projects range from modified torque wrench end fittings to complete torque and angle control of multi-spindle nut runners. Relevant European Safety Directives are applied where appropriate, giving further assurance that your engineer to order equipment is of the high standard that you expect and require from all your Norbar products.
