IR Window Portholes – Identifying Extreme Hot-spots in Marine Electrical Systems
One of the leading UK independent third-party offshore service providers for thermographic surveys, Geo Therm Ltd, has over the past 22 years specialised in Thermographic surveys in the maritime and offshore oil and gas industry, visiting over 40 countries during their legacy.
With approved ABS and LR service provider status, Geo Therm inspections facilitate stake-holder jack- up rigs, drill ships, semi-subs and workboat PM requirements across the globe. Additional services offered include electrical Ex inspections, condition monitoring services and ultrasonic enclosure testing for water tightness of hatches and doors.
A key factor influencing Geo Therm’s most recent international success is the 2023 National Fire Prevention Association NFPA 70B requirement, making annual electrical thermal safety inspections mandatory, and adopted as a standard by the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA), the main US government agency responsible for the enforcement of Safety and Health legislation in American industry.
Although NFPA and OSHA recognise Thermography inspections as “mission-critical to an effective EPM (electrical preventive maintenance) program” an all- too-common dilemma is that equipment is best tested at 40% loading. Live inspections have inherent dangers such as electrical shock and arc flash potential.
The ability to circumvent this safety issue is where Geo Therm’s window of opportunity comes into play. Since company formation they have advocated and retrofitted thousands of infrared inspection windows to electrical assets, complimenting their thermal surveys and enabling the internal scanning of high voltage switchboards, transformers and engine generators safely.
The procurement, installation, and use of IR windows, permit real-time feedback during
operations, enabling the detection of extreme component temperatures before a breakdown or asset downtime incident occurs.
With concise and impartial survey report generation engineers are able to make informed decisions to stop, repair or monitor, with reports supporting Classification audits and insurance prerequisites.
An annual Thermographic survey performed by Geo Therm will certainly identify failing equipment early, with services performed by experienced IIMS surveyors, and scope of works tailored to suit each asset need.
Geo Therm Ltd are an independent UK company based in East Anglia with a global reach, with accreditations from Safe Contractor, ISO 9001:2015 and is FPAL registered. Moreover, they are an approved specialist service supplier for the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and Lloyds Register (LR) with the credibility, experience and know how to assist your annual Thermographic PM need.
