THE TECHNICAL CHALLENGE
Development of a selective breeding programme for a genetically unique population of Scottish Atlantic Salmon.
TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCE
Whilst the population of salmon already has many desirable characteristics, the company aimed to use selective breeding to strengthen their traits. Development of a selective breeding programme is not readily deducible and the company were required to carry out a great deal of research. Selection of the parents is extremely important and is a far more complicated process in Atlantic salmon than in mammalian livestock, due to the external fertilisation of eggs.
Solutions tried
The company have spent considerable time and effor in researching, from initial trait selection to investigating the genetic relatedness of the breeding stock to prevent inbreeding, which reduces the gene pool and consequently the fitness of the strain.
