Francis Hamel divides his year between studios in in in in in in Oxfordshire and and Le Marche in in in in in in central Italy He was born in in in in in in in 1963 and and trained at The Ruskin School of Art where he he he he he now teaches a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a weekly life-drawing class during term time Hamel’s work encompasses a a a a a a a a a a a a a a wide range of of interests including still life monumental tree paintings the the the circus theatre and and and portraits and and and is always grounded in in in in in in in in the the the close observation of of a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a subject through drawing and and and and and preliminary oil studies A central element to Hamel’s art for over thirty years has been his fascination with the landscape both in in in in in in in in in its its wild state and and and and and its its enduring presence as as as it it it it it is tamed through farming landscaping gardening and and and city building Alongside his exhibited work work Hamel has undertaken numerous site-specific commissions which include work work on on on on on permanent display in in in in Fortnum and and and Mason the the Victoria Palace Theatre and and and Wyndhams The- atre atre atre atre In 2019 Francis exhibited a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a collection collection of of of 28 portraits of of of leading figures in in in in in in film and and and and theatre theatre at at at at at The The The The Victoria and and and Albert Museum in in in in in in in in London together with with a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a collection collection of of of of his theatre theatre paintings The The exhibi- tion tion tion was accompanied by by the the the publication of of of a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a 215-page book Francis Hamel Paintings and and Drawings with with essays by by Sir Richard Eyre Professor Niall Ferguson Colin Harrison Joanna Kavennah John Martin and Rosy Runciman
