Amerikan filmlerinde görmeye alışık olduğumuz kırmızı upuzun köprü, Golden Gate Köprüsü. Rengi itibarıyla ”Kır- mızı Köprü” olarak da anılıyor.
Bu ünlü köprü, yaklaşık üç kilometre uzunluğunda ve San Francisco’yu Marin County şehrine bağlıyor.
Golden Gate, “Altın Kapı” anlamına geliyor. Bu ismin geç- mişte bölgeye altın aramaya gelen İspanyollar tarafından verildiği düşünülüyor. Diğer bir rivayet ise, bizim İstanbu- lumuzun meşhur köprülerinden olan ve “Golden Horn” olarak anılan Haliç Köprüsü’nün güzelliğinden etkilenen mimarın bu ismi verdiği güçlü ihtimaller arasında...
Bu güzel köprü, şehrin her yerinden görülebiliyor. Köp- rü 1937 yılında inşa edildiğinde dünyanın en uzun asma köprüsü olmuş. Bugün, yılda 3 milyondan fazla turist San Fransisco’ya bu köprüyü görmeye geliyor. Turistler, köp- rü üstünde yürüyebiliyor, bisikletle gezebiliyor ve körfez manzarasını izleyebiliyor. Manzaraya bakarken bazen fok balıkları da takılıyor gözlere. Bu köprü, muhakak görülmesi gereken bir mimari harikası.
