“Albert Camus”nün (1913-1960) en tanınmış, en çok yabancı dile çevrilmiş, en çok incelenmiş ve hâlâ en çok satan kitaplar arasında yer alan “Yabancı”, aynı zamanda yazarın en gizemli yapıtı.
Ölümün egemen olduğu bir “varlık”ın en an- lamsız olgularını saçma bir düzensizlik içinde yaşayan bu romanın başkişisi “Meursault”, bir simge kahraman değildir, “adı” olmayan bir “Yabancı”dır; bu eksik kimlik, gerçeklikten al- gıladığı şeyi yapılandıramayan, yeniden örgüt- leyemeyen ama gerçekliğin yankılarını yakala- maya çalışan bir boş bilincin imgesidir.
Onun kayıtsızlığı ve edilgenliği, işte bu boş bilin- cin ürünüdür. Yabancı, büyüleyici gücünü, içinde barındırdığı trajedi duygusuna borçlu: Bir türlü ele geçirilemeyen anlamın sürekli aranması, bi- linç ile toplumsal dünya arasındaki çatışma...
Camus’yle buluşanların hiçbiri, onunla karşılaşınca hayal kırıklığına uğramamıştır. “Mutluluk, bir yerde ve her yerde hiçbir şey beklemeden dünyayı, insanları sevmektir,” der Camus. Giderek daha çok sevilen bir yazar olması, onun bu sevgisinin yansımasından başka bir şey değildir.

The Stranger | Albert Camus
The most well known book of Albert Camus (1913-1960), translated into many foreign languages, the most studied and still among the best-sellers; “Stranger” is actually his most mysterious work.
The protagonist “Meursault” is living the most senseless phenomena of the “existence”, domi- nated by the death, in a ridiculous irregularity. He is not a symbol protagonist, he is a “the Stranger” without a name; this missing identity is the image of an empty consciousness that cannot recon- struct what it perceives from reality, cannot reor- ganize, but strives to catch the echoes of reality.
His indifference and passiveness is the product of this empty consciousness. “The Stranger” is fascinating with the sense of tragedy it contains: a constant search for meaning that cannot be captured, the conflict between the conscious- ness and the social world...
No one is disappointed after meeting Camus. “Happiness means loving the world, the people without waiting for any- thing and anywhere”, says Camus. The fact that he is becom- ing increasingly popular is nothing but the reflection of his love.
