the instruction to inscribe God’s
commands onto the “the doorposts of
your house and on your gates”.
Deuteronomy 6:6-9 says,
“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God,
the Lord is one! You shall love
the Lord your God with all your
heart, with all your soul, and with all
your strength. And these words which
I command you today shall be in your
heart. You shall teach them diligently
to your children, and shall talk of them
when you sit in your house, when you
walk by the way, when you lie down,
and when you rise up. You shall bind
them as a sign on your hand, and they
shall be as frontlets between your eyes.
You shall write them on the doorposts of
your house and on your gates.”
This passage is included on the
scroll along with the similar, but slightly
different, repeat in Deuteronomy
chapter 11. It serves as a visible
reminder of the symbolic way in which
this Scripture is being fulfilled – that
the home has been sanctified by God,
or set apart for a Holy purpose. This
becomes a mission for the family to
obey the command to love God with
all your heart, soul and strength. If the
family includes children, it includes a
command for parents to teach God’s
commandments to them diligently. The
scroll is a reminder that this ‘greatest
commandment’, as Jesus identified in
Matthew 22, is to be shared openly and
constantly to their children “when you
walk by the way, when you rest, and
you rise.” In other words, all the time.
It also says it should be done
“diligently”, further emphasising its
importance and urgency, and according
to this command in Deuteronomy,
the responsibility of that instilling
rested primarily with parents – and
it still does. The Church also has a
responsibility to support parents in this
holy commission. Ask the Lord to show
you how you can make a difference in
reaching the next generation, either
among your own family, or through
your church’s ministry.
To share a love for Zion
Zion is at the very centre of God’s plans
and purposes here on earth. Being a Christian
Zionist is not embarrassing – it is Biblical. As
Christians concerned about support for Israel
among the next generation, we must make
our love for Zion the focus of our support for
Israel.
The Bible actually refers to Zion in an
example of passing the truth onto the next
generation. In Psalm 48, the Psalmist points
to Jerusalem as evidence of God’s greatness.
Psalm 48:12-14 says,
“Walk about Zion,
And go all around her.
Count her towers;
Mark well her bulwarks;
Consider her palaces;
That you may tell it to the generation following.
For this is God,
Our God forever and ever;
He will be our guide
Even to death.”
Jerusalem was the place of God’s
presence, the place of God’s salvation, the
place of God’s sacrifice, the place of God’s
righteousness; a place where God’s light shall
shine forth. A testimony of God’s goodness
and faithfulness to His people. A reminder that
what was brought down shall be rebuilt, what
was oppressed shall be restored, and what
was left broken shall become a praise to all
the earth. Now, the Psalmist says, tell it to the
generation that follows and tell them that God
is our guide forever and ever.
As Christians, our burden is for the next
generation to have a love for Zion. Because a
love for Zion is also a love for God, a love for
truth, and an understanding of God’s special
plan and purpose according to His Word.
This is what we want our young people
to embrace. The enemy is feeding our young
people lies that deny Zion and deny God. But
through the prayerful and diligent sharing of
truth as His witnesses, we must believe that it
has power to overcome.
