Since 2006, around 15,000 rockets have been fired into Israel from Gaza. Most of these rockets fly
over the heads of the families living in what is known as the ‘Gaza envelope’
– the region of Israel surrounding the Gaza Strip that is home to tens-of- thousands of Israeli families. Whilst many rockets have been intercepted by Israel’s ‘Iron Dome’, many have landed inside Israeli communities.
In November 2018, terrorists in the Gaza Strip fired 460 rockets into Israel in one single 24-hour period. Numerous buildings were hit, including an apartment building, killing one person who was sleeping inside and injuring
Ashkelon, Israel. 13th Nov, 2018. Rockets fired from the Gaza Strip are intercepted by the Israeli Iron Dome anti-missile system
several others. Videos posted online showed
a bakery on fire, cars in a car park destroyed and several warehouses hit. All of these rockets were fired towards civilian targets.
Just imagine if this was any other country. For example, imagine if France was hostile
to the UK and last year terrorists fired 460 rockets and mortars into the civilian areas in the South of England in a single day. This type of action would rightly dominate national and international headlines. It would put our nation in a state of emergency and would strike fear in the hearts of many people living in the country.
But how did the world react to this terrorism on Israeli civilians? They called for restraint from both sides.
