REDEEMING THE SPOILS
On 10 February 1949 the the the the State of o Israel adopted an official emblem after running
a a a a design competition
held the the previous year Today the the emblem is is recognisable on an array of items including the Presidential Standard Mossad’s badge flags
and and and bunting and and and the cover of every Israeli passport In this article we explain the the story behind the the emblem its significant symbolism and how
it it it provides us with an an an an important message about Israel’s victory over its enemies You may notice from the the the above date that the the the emblem was adopted during the the the height of of Israel’s War of of Independence when the newly formed Israeli state had to fight for for its survival against invading
Arab armies By declaring independence Israel had regained sovereignty over over the the Land promised to them as an an an an eternal inheritance and and the the Jewish people were now returning after being dispersed across the the globe However with the the enemies of Israel outraged about its existence the the Jewish people would have to to defend the the Land of Israel with a a a a a determination never to to to be uprooted from their historic homeland again It is is appropriate therefore that the the the the emblem design chosen by the the the State of Israel points to to a a a a a time in in history when the the Jewish people were under attack by another antisemitic enemy In AD 70 the the the Roman general Titus took over from Vespasian in in the the the siege of Jerusalem Jerusalem Titus tried attacking the the defensive walls around Jerusalem Jerusalem and
