188 Leiby – Border Smuggler
indeed found your sister, they must be waiting for you to come
and claim her.”
“Just hold on one moment, I’ll call my friend. Please wait here
for me.”
He ran up the stone stairs and entered the building. Finding
Leiby still fast asleep, he shook him violently. “Leiby, Leiby, get
up. There’s a woman here who says that we have to turn to the
police.”
“The police have said that they’ll turn a blind eye to illegal
immigration,” Leiby mumbled, still half asleep.
“No… if someone found my sister, they must have taken her
to the police,” Yosef insisted, agitatedly. He pulled wildly at
his drowsy friend and shook the plant pot hard, dancing with
impatience. The pot smashed to smithereens, and Leiby fell to
the floor.
“What happened?” he asked, his vision blurred from sleep.
“We need to turn to the police,” Yosef repeated.
All at once, Leiby was wide awake. He washed his hands and
turned to Yosef.
“How didn’t I think of it before?” He slapped his forehead in
disbelief. “The first thing we should have done is to notify the
police. I’ll come with you, but we need a translator.”
“There’s a lady waiting for us outside,” Yosef was relieved to see
that Leiby was taking the suggestion seriously. “She said that
she’ll go with us to the police station, and she can translate for
us too.”
Leiby hurried outside after his friend. The woman and her
daughter were waiting for them patiently beside the ornate
wooden gate.
“The police station is fairly close by, just a few streets away,” she
encouraged them. She glanced down at her watch and broke
