transport together with Mirushka; no one had been in any
hurry to send them to France, and now she had disappeared,
just as Shlomo said.

“In any event, if your sister is back in Poland, you’ll have to
get her out as quickly as you can,” Shlomo warned. “The Iron
Curtain may slam closed any day, and then anyone who’s still
behind it will be stuck there.”

“I’ll go back to Poland, and I’ll search for Mirushka in the
farmer’s home,” Leiby promised. “It may take some time and
I have to get my mother and sister Chava out too, and also
my friend Sandy. We were partisans together in the forest, and
now he’s all alone in the world. I want to get him to a Jewish
environment.”

Yosef looked at Leiby sadly. “So we have to say goodbye?” He
asked. “I was hoping that we could look for Miriam together!”

“No, Yosef, we’re not saying goodbye,” Leiby reassured him.
“When hearts share a bond, nothing can come between them.
But we do have to enlarge the area that we’re looking in. Hersh
will search for your sister in Germany, I’ll be in Poland, and you
have to stay here. Perhaps Mirushka will come back here one
day and find you!”

Yosef was mollified. “I feel sure that we’ll find Miriam in the
end,” he confided. “Last night I dreamed that I found her and
she was so happy to see me. I enjoyed the dream so much that
I didn’t want to wake up.”

“Daven, Yosef, daven that the dream will come true, b’ezras
Hashem,” Leiby said.
