               Chapter 27

“What a shame that it’s not snowing today,” Leiby mused. If it
had been snowing, they would have left footprints and it would
have been far easier for him to track down the group that had
left the farm earlier that day. But the weather was pleasant and
clear and Leiby looked hopelessly at the vast green expanses
stretched out before him. They had left no sign at all behind
them, and he had no way of knowing which path Alexander
had led them on on their trek to the border.

The sky turned gray and a thick, impenetrable darkness fell on
the fields. Leiby looked up at the stars, trying to navigate his
way. He had never been in the area before and had no idea how
on earth he could find the group of refugees that he was looking
for. He decided to walk towards a faint light that he could see
in the distance, guessing that it was coming from a local police
station that patrolled the roads leading to the border.

The frigid night air slapped his face as he walked. The light that
he had seen was far more distant than he had imagined and he
walked for ages, exhausted, with all his limbs crying out in pain.
When he finally arrived, it proved to be just a desolate army
base, leading to nowhere at all. Alexander had certainly not led
the group here, but where had he brought them then? Where
