leaned on the windowsill. Beyond the broken wooden shutters,
the wind howled fiercely and dried his tears. He gazed up at
the rapidly lightening sky and a thought struck him. Of course
Mama is here! Mama is up in shamayim and is begging from
Hashem that He help her children. Mama is here with them,
and surely it was only due to her prayers that their mission had
been a success and they had been able to take Mirushka away
from the antagonistic farmers.
Yosef stroked his sister’s cheek. Soft moonlight bathed the faces
of the siblings, giving them a mysterious, otherworldly light. It
was like a gentle caress from afar, like the smile of a mother who
sees her children returning home.
