loved representing all the officers. He wanted to bring them all in as one. He was a union go-getter, and he wanted everyone to be part of it.”
Lodge 7 Trustee Ken Hauser, who has been involved with run- ning the golf outing since the days when Skelly took the lead, contemplated what he wanted this event to be all about. Yes, it’s a chance to see old friends, make new ones, share some stories enjoy hearty barbecue cuisine. But Skelly’s basic objective was much more simple.
“Just to have some laughs,” Hauser assessed. “Tom was just a fun-loving guy who wanted everybody to have a good time.”

ery player to go home with a lovely parting gift. Prizes included tickets to Chicago sporting events, rounds of golf, golf clubs, beverage baskets, flat-screen televisions and CPD bar stools.
An added bonus the past few years has been the Million Dol- lar Shootout, for which five participants are selected from a raf- fle to play the 180-yard, par-3 ninth hole on Course No. 3. Four of them took a shot at a hole-in-one that would have claimed $100,000, and a fifth had had the chance to shoot for $1 million.
Joe Kelly, a 17-year veteran of the Department who works in 016, and Area North Detective Dan Honda were two of the four players shooting for the $100,000. Kelly pushed his shot right; Honda dumped his in the pond running from just below the tee to the green. Ken Soo, a captain with CFD, took the Million Dol- lar Shoot and missed the green.
Kelly admitted being a little nervous. But being off target didn’t dissuade from him experiencing everything that Skelly would have wanted.
“We hang out, have a good time and get away from the job for a day,” Kelly shared. “I want to come back every year. I love it.”d
