Glenn-Ellyn/Leo-police connection. Nobody is, or has to be, tougher than Chicago Police Officers these days, and it’s not hard to see here how that gets passed down to their kids.
“My parents are pretty tough because of the job they do,” Scott confided. “I look at them, and think I can be pretty tough, too.”
The cop influence apparently contributed to Scott’s march to the state finals, and it started shortly after Jake passed. He dedicated himself to the cause, as is the Chica- go cop way, to overcome adversity, which is what Chicago cops do every day. As Murzyn assessed it, Scott paid the price, and nobody knows how to do that and the toll it takes more than Chicago cops.
Chicago Police Offers also make the best mentors, and Murzyn formed such a relationship with Scott to help him put together a season worthy of the tribute he wanted for Jake.
“I think Scott knows there a bond with me because of the law enforcement background,” Murzyn continued. “When you tie in the law enforcement connection to the love-of-the-sport connection to the spirituality connec- tion, that’s a powerful formula.”
That, of course, leads to the question that naturally comes up regarding Scott’s future. Yes, he would make a great cop. Denise sees Scott’s commitment to his convic- tions and goals and his honoring his friends and family as the greatest indication that he might follow his parents and his older brother, William, who recently began at the Chicago Police Academy.
“I’m not ruling out Scott becoming a cop, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he did something in the medical profes- sion,” Denise said. “I can see him doing something with some type of healing.”
If Scott wanted to become a police officer, it seems there already might be a job waiting for him.
“I’ll tell you what, I am going to ask him,” Leo submit- ted. “I know he could protect us. The sky is the limit for him. That’s the way I felt about Jake. The two of them to- gether...it would have been great to watch.”
Fighting spirit
Scott was on vacation in Florida with his family the day that Jake passed. He must have known something because Denise said Scott did not want to go on the trip. “That morning I got the message, and I’m thinking about how I’m going to tell him,” Denise said. “But he knew when he woke up. This calm just came over him.”
When he returned from Florida, Scott knew his duty. He didn’t share his intention to dedicate the season to Jake with anybody at that point, but Murzyn saw a newfound dedication from Scott. He took on a morning push-up routine. He hit the weight room at night. “He discovered the meaning of life,” Murzyn remarked.
As his act of heroism quietly unfolded, Scott’s objective was just to do something good for a friend, to find some- thing to put his mind to as motivation. But see if what he was doing sounds familiar.
Scott was running toward adversity when others might
