“These folks had some purpose to be down there,” Brandt relayed. “For however long, they stayed there to pay respect to these souls.”
Gorman observed that many of the civilians and first re- sponders also had baby-blue ribbons pinned to their lapels, an
indicator of someone who lost a loved one during the 9/11 at- tacks.
“That was a sobering moment,” Gorman expressed. “Those people lost family members there. And here they are 20 years later. So they never forgot. And we never forget either.”
One civilian was holding an American flag with all the names of the people who died in the towers. The officers learned that the gentleman had his own story of the tragic day. A photo taken with the survivor is Ortiz’s favorite from her experience in New York.
