Inaugural Newsletter (Magazine)
DEAN C. ANGELO, SR.
It would be beyond negligent if this article did not begin by celebrating the new design and overall first-class arrangement of Chicago Lodge 7’s Official Magazine (formally our Newsletter). Many of us believe that the changeover to this for- mat was long overdue. Wanting to do so was another task that this Administration set its sights
poport from Krurapp Publications, who worked their backsides off manicuring the final agree- ment that our Board could agree upon and also for personally investing themselves in the Lodge, this venture would not have happened. So on behalf of the Board of Directors that voted to support this change, it is our collective hope that Membership enjoys the new magazine for- mat. It is also our objective to ensure that this new publication continues to be a source of per- tinent and viable information that everyone looks forward to receiving month after month.
We hope that you enjoy reading the “Inaugural Issue” as much as we have working on it.
Grand Lodge’s 100th anniversary
Within this issue, there will be information about the 62nd Biennial National Conference and Expo that was held in Pittsburgh in August, celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Frater- nal Order of Police. Albeit that Lodge 7 is the largest individual lodge in the country, when all of the local and state lodges get together to par- ticipate in a national event, we are quickly reminded that Lodge 7 is merely one of many of the contributing building blocks of the national scene. The Grand Lodge reports that the Frater- nal Order of Police is made up of more than 2,100 Lodges and boasts an overall membership of more than 325,000 strong. When we look at the 17,500 Members of Lodge 7, things quickly get put into perspective.
From the smallest of departments in rural America to the larger agencies of our country’s major metropolitan areas, the National Fraternal Order of Police’s overwhelming popu- lation began quietly on a Pittsburgh street corner with the efforts of two Pittsburgh patrol officers. It was in 1915, when Officers Martin Toole and Delbert Nagle decided that working 365 12-plus hour days a year with no guaranteed benefits or job protection, was no longer accept- able. The rest, as it were, is history. Looking at the benefits many FOP members now enjoy, Chicago Lodge 7 is so very thankful to these two men. As we were surrounded by the sisters and brothers from around the country, we were humbled and proud to be one of those con-
on. As was mentioned in several earlier writings, for printing and postage, the previous format of our Newsletter cost the Lodge (Membership) more than $12,000 per month. By utilizing this new format, for the first time we now have the opportunity to immediately reduce our costs. Financially speaking, as support for the maga- zine continues to grow, the Lodge (and the Members) will continue to save. This inaugural issue has already saved the Membership $5,000 in costs! It is the Board’s hope to eventually save a total of $10,000 per month; thereby saving the Members $120,000 per year! We will be periodi- cally sharing the total savings as things progress.
By finally having the opportunity to increase the amount of pages available to us offers the Lodge the chance to expand its reporting on internal FOP business. We can also share indi- vidual member’s achievements and awards. Articles concerning legal defense matters or labor law issues will now be shared. Changes about pending legislation and an expanded cal- endar of events have been added as well. As policing continues to change and law enforce- ment moves through its next transitional period, the magazine’s expanded format will guarantee that those changes become part and parcel of our monthly correspondence. The typical infor- mation that the readers expect to see, such as articles from the Board or the Field Representa- tives, from our chaplains and the FOP Store will always be included. In addition regular reports on the Lodge’s Benefits Program, a new retiree report, pension fund updates and much, much more will now be incorporated.
To close out this segment, we wish to first take a moment to thank two men who have greatly assisted the Lodge in finalizing the changeover. If it were not for Mitchell Krugel and Dan Rap-
