C fficer of the onth honored for heling elderly assalt victim

The unprovoked attack on a 91-year- old man in Chinatown in September drew plenty of attention as a heinous display of violence.
Michael Bazarek, the officer respon- sible for the suspect’s capture, right- fully received his own recognition in November, when the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation named him its Officer of the Month.
According to officials, Bazarek stopped in Chinatown on Sept. 18 looking for a cup of coffee when he saw a man walking down Wentworth, wav- ing wildly and scaring people off the sidewalk. Bazarek’s instincts prompted him to follow the man, who was talking and shouting to himself. Bazarek said the suspect was acting in a threatening manner, frightening people in the area.
