“In order to be a safe sailor, you have to be an educated sailor,” Harvey explained. “Just as with police work, you can’t learn how to be a police officer by reading a book, you have to be on the street doing the job to know the job. This is why I like to race. It puts me on the water in condi- tions I normally wouldn’t sail in.”
Harvey agrees with the idea that police officers need to find ways to be more than just a cop in their lives and likes
how sailing helps creates a different identity for him, while also providing an outlet for dealing with job-related stress. “No matter what’s going on in the city, especially with the job, whatever is going on in your life, whatever you’re feeling, once you get out on the water it all goes away,” Harvey shared. “It’s calming because there’s no motor. You just hear the water and the wind. Once you get about a mile away from shore, you don’t even hear the city noises
anymore.”
With as many police officers as there are in the city,
Harvey figures there might be a few other sailors around and possibly some novices who would like to learn more. That’s what inspired him to pursue approval to start the Department’s official sailing club – Chicago Police Sailing Association, also known as the CPD Blue Line Sailors. He is also working on creating partnerships to help to develop training opportunities for new sailors, and providing ac- cess to sail through existing clubs along the Lakefront.
Recently, Harvey completed classes to be certified as a boat captain. It’s another step toward his vision of seeing a boat full of Chicago cops, city flag flying overhead, hitting the water for sailing competitions. Allow Harvey to think even bigger, and he fashions the idea of a team of police officers placing in “The Mac.”
“That would be beyond a dream,” he said with a tinge of excitement in his voice. “That would be world news.” d
