SB 35 establishes immigrant safe zones, which originally pre- vented local law enforcement from assisting federal agencies in securing illegal immigrants but was amended to allow for such assistance in certain circumstances.
SB 275 establishes rules for maintaining gang databases on which the Senate sponsor accepted input from law enforce- ment. The bill never made it to the House in time to be heard.
SB 370 originally included all police and fire pension funds in regards to the sweep of state funds when a municipality (Har- vey) fails to make suitable contributions as required. Initial dis- cussion removed Chicago Police and Fire from the inclusion.
SB 2642 removes the requirement for a Firearms Control Card to be obtained by a retiree who continues to work in se- curity and is required to possess a PERC Card as well as a ILESA Card (HR218).
SB 2925 is a bill which passed and, with input from several of CPD’s School Resource Officers, we were able to negotiate a reasonable training curriculum which is devoid of school man- agement deciding when police action can or can’t be taken.
SB 3547 simplifies and secures benefits for public employ- ees who are service members as well. This bill was addressed by many public-sector representatives and assisted greatly by our military committee and its chair, Jerry Cruz.
These are just a few of the more than 230 bills that we identi- fied as having a potential impact on Police Officers, particular- ly in the City of Chicago. A total of 9,531 bills were introduced in this General Assembly, as well as 2,990 resolutions, many of which could have been amended to impact us in some way. Working together with the Lodge members, as well as other law enforcement representatives from across the State, we were able to minimize the damage that the legislature can cause and acquired a few bills that directly benefit the membership. d
