If there’s one objective a golf outing has, it’s a day off for members of law enforcement. And if there’s a second opportunity at hand, it’s giving back to the community.
That’s exactly what the Chicago FOP Family Auxiliary did when it hosted its annual golf outing on June 19 at the Bloomingdale Golf Club.
The sixth annual event once again benefitted children of auxiliary and FOP members in pursuit of their education. Children as young as preschoolers all the way through high schoolers are awarded scholarships of $500 each.
Once the child has been entered, his or her name is put into a raf- fle. Angie Haynes, president of the FOP Family Auxiliary, then draws the winning names.
Haynes stated that they started the event because they “felt that it would be good to give scholarships to police officers’ children, and we wanted to do something to remember all police officers, wheth- er they were alive or deceased.”
In addition to retired FOP members, many of the participants in the golf outing were from the business community, who continue to support officers and their families.
“Anybody who wanted to play golf knew about this event,” Haynes said. “It seems like everybody that I talked to, or that came up to me, thought it was a worthy cause because giving out these scholarships to these officers’ children is a good thing.”
