Bears legend meets life-saving of cer as part of IFAK donation
A courageous player during his NFL career, former Chi- cago Bears cornerback Charles “Peanut” Tillman showed his gratitude to Chicago police—and one of its life-saving officers in particular—during a recent visit to 6th District headquarters in the Gresham neighborhood.
Tillman—always a fan favorite for his play on the field and dedication to the community off of it—made the trip to meet Officer David Nicholl and represent the Bears, who partnered with the Chicago Police Foundation in the donation of 75 individual first-aid kits to the district.
In January, Nicholl used his LEMAR training and a med- ical kit to save the life of a man with a gunshot wound to the chest. Nicholl was off duty when he heard gunfire near his home and came upon two people who had been injured. He applied “quick clot” to the man’s chest before paramedics arrived to provide additional medical treat- ment.
The foundation distributed hundreds of the LEMAR kits in October as part of a goal to put 2,000 of them into the hands of officers across the city to prepare them for emergency medical care situations.
“We need this equipment. The training is basic, but with the equipment we can help a lot of people,” Nich-
oll told Tillman, noting he had purchased kit items on his own. “It means a lot for us to get these packs.”
In addition to presenting the LEMAR kits, Tillman was given a tour of the headquarters, met with officers and viewed some of the technology being used to fight crime in the district. d
