A curveball in the House race as Election Day approaches
Just as there never seems to be a dull moment in Washington politics, Illinois appears to always be throwing curveballs. In a highly unusual move, the House Republican political operation has with- drawn support from one of its top-tier candidates in this election.
LaSalle County-area GOP State Representative Jerry Long has been accused of a harassment in- cident that was serious enough for House Repub- lican Leader Jim Durkin to pull his support for his
fellow Republican legislator. I cannot LEGISLATIVE Report recall when that has happened in the
heat of a campaign for a top target race.
In practical terms, this rare move in the midst of the cam- paign will likely mean that the Democrat in the race will win easily. The Democrat there is Lance Yednock, a member of the Operating Engineers Local 150 union.
As we move quickly toward Election Day, polls continue to show that Democrat J.B. Pritzker leads Governor Rauner by dou- ble digits. Some polls have Pritzker up by more than 20 points. While it is unlikely that he will win by that large of a margin, it does look like the Democrat will be victorious. In addition, if the blue wave holds, Democrats have a good chance of winning more seats in this election.
The legislature will return to session after the election to ad- dress vetoes that the governor has issued, as well as other legis- lative matters. d
