On March 23, 2021, a 70-year-old man arrived in Chicago from Kansas. He was concerned that he had not heard from his 30-year-old son, who lived at 240 E. Illinois. A well-being check was conducted, and the man was found deceased and in a state of decay. The apartment was in hoarder-like condition, with home- made laboratory equipment and chemicals strewn about.
CPD Bomb Squad and CFD Haz Mat conducted a secondary search and located several more chemicals and homemade devic- es. The team formulated a plan. Due to the cluttered apartment and confined space, the robot was unable to be utilized to remove
the suspicious objects. Residents were evacuated and traffic was rerouted, and a removal route was plotted out. Explosives Tech- nician McNicholas donned the 100-pound explosive suit and removed the objects by hand and placed them into a TCV (total containment vehicle). The suspicious objects were removed to a safe location via a convoy and were rendered safe after being exploded.
The team returned to the apartment and discovered more suspicious pipe bombs, which were transported away from the scene and detonated. The following day, building management contacted a cleanup service, which discovered more chemicals and medical-grade radioactive waste. The Illinois Emergency Management Agency removed and identified the chemicals and waste, which were determined to be hazardous to human life.
