Legislative attention turns to fall veto session
Governor J.B. Pritzker has now acted on all the bills that the General Assembly sent him this spring. Legislative attention now turns to the fall veto ses- sion, which begins in October.
Of the 599 bills that passed both chambers this session, he signed 591 of those bills, vetoed seven bills and issued an amendatory veto on one bill. It is not surprising that the vast majority of the bills sent to the Democratic governor by the Democratic-con- trolled legislature were signed.
The political news now turns to petitions. Can- didates for election next year are now passing petitions for their election. All members of the House are up for re-election, as are about a third of the Senate.
There has been one more announced retirement in recent weeks. Far downstate GOP Senator Paul Schimpf is seeking a fed- eral judgeship, so he will not run for re-election next year.
The primary is set for Tuesday, March 17, 2020, and the general election will be held Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2020.
If last year’s election is any indication, then the GOP should do well south of Springfield and the Democrats will do well north- east of Joliet. As one would expect, it will be another fascinating election in Illinois and throughout the U.S.
As veto session approaches and plans for next year’s regular session begin, we will continue to work for solid public policy for policing.
In addition, we will continue to monitor the Chicago casino is- sue as it develops.
