When word came that Bernie had passed, the boys called the CPMF the next morning, and Executive Director Phil Cline person- ally assured that all funeral arrangements would be taken care of and that it would be another confirmation of what Denise wanted for Bernie.
“They made us feel like we never drifted away from the police family,” she reiterates. “The Memorial Foundation always let us know that ‘We’re in this together and we’re all behind you.’”
Chicago Police Chaplain Father Dan Brandt, who is also a mem- ber of the CPMF board, presided over Bernie’s funeral. As Father Dan has been known to do, he provided a happy ending to this feel- good story.
At the end of the Mass, he asked everybody to repeat after him a sentiment for Bernie to hear.
“We will never forget,” Father Dan began.
The churched echoed back with “We will never forget.”
“Again,” Father Dan asked.
The echo continues to reverberate, for we will never forget Bernie
Domagala. d
