Mercy Hospital shooting inspires donation for vests
Inspired to honor the victims of the Nov. 19 shooting at Mercy Hospital and protect Chicago Police Officers from gun violence, the local chapter of the Association of Physicians of Pakistani Descent of North America made a $5,000 donation for the pur- chase of protective bulletproof vests.
During a Dec. 15 event at the Chicago Police Department headquarters, representatives of the Pakistan Physicians Soci- ety of Illinois presented a check to Chicago Police Superinten- dent Eddie Johnson, who accepted it on behalf of the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation’s “Get Behind the Vest” campaign.
PPS Illinois President Rahat Sheikh indicated that the dona- tion’s goal is to help protect the officers who protect everyone in the city, according to a published report.
CPMF officials said protective vests need to be replaced ev- ery five years. A vest is permanently damaged and considered unusable once hit by a single bullet. Officers are responsible for replacing their own
vests, which can cost
$500 or more.
The CPMF has al- ready donated thou- sands of vests since the campaign’s in- ception, and aims to supply 500 each year to help keep officers safe.
