Rememerin a hero officer ears later
An outdoor memorial roll call held at 18th and Loom- is on June 28 brought together Chicago Police Officers and the community to remember Officer Brian Strouse where he spent his final hours 17 years ago.
Strouse was working near that intersection as a plain- clothes tactical officer doing gang surveillance in the early morning hours of June 30, 2001, when a gunman opened fire on him in an alley. Despite Strouse’s orders to the offender to
drop his weapon, several more shots rang out before Strouse was fatally struck. His protective vest stopped one bullet to his chest, but a shot to his head proved deadly.
Dozens of officers and several people who knew Strouse, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, turned out for the memorial ceremony, during which speakers praised Strouse’s bravery and character. Strouse earned 61 commendations and a life- saving award during his six years with the Department. d
