It was going to be the same thing every three or four years,” observed Monica Ortiz, a 23-year veteran who served as a watch rep and unit rep at unit 16 at O’Hare before being elect- ed to her first term as a trustee this year. “This will definitely lift morale. I’ve had a lot of positive feedback from members who finally feel like they have a voice after hearing all the peo- ple here.”
The transformation did not occur in one night. But this one- night stand did send out a palpable message.
“I was a unit rep for many years and it seemed like the members were last,” Markovich confided. “Now, the members come first.”
Nice to meet you
Coming into the meeting, there might have been an aura of crisis management. After all, this administration has taken over facing a conglomeration of challenges unlike any other police officers anywhere have ever faced.
