6 CHICAGO LODGE 7 ■ JULY 2020
CATANZARA CONTINUED FROM PAGE 5
who makes us a target. One of the loudest cheers at the meet- ing came when we said we are calling out the upper echelon of the Chicago Teachers Union. The Illinois Supreme Court ruling they fought for that dictates public policy overrides any arbi- tration decisions wasn’t specific to Lodge 7, but it’s drawing a line in the sand to make us public enemy No. 1. They picked the wrong fight, so we’re going to FOIA all their discipline records and expose their hypocrisy.
As you know, things change by the minute these days. You have probably heard my response to the mayor pushing anon- ymous complaints, even though state law prohibits them. Our response is to not allow her to ramrod what she wants to get done. It’s a simple point of negotiating in good faith, which she does not appear to want to do.
If she wants to show fairness, ensure sworn affidavits, be- cause they provide some level of mental health for our mem- bers. We need to ensure that we’re not going to be bombard- ed with fake allegations that will cost money and further tax an overtaxed and not professionally run system. If she wants them, give us the ability to strike. Let us stand up for ourselves.
As far as negotiating the contract, obviously we need to re- view the arbitration ruling on the sergeants’ contract and de- termine what that means. After the Fourth of July, we were scheduled to meet with the City. We have been told they want to address the retro pay and get that off the books right now, so we will review it with our labor attorneys and see how it parlays into what we are seeking.
So we are seeing progress. We are raising our voice, and we are being heard. Remember, it’s your voice that is making all the difference.
