The way President Trump hugged Chuck Canterbury when the National FOP President introduced him as they keynote speaker for the National Peace Officers Memorial Service on May 15 would only be the start of the way he embraced law enforcement on its most important day of the year.
“Wow, what a beautiful introduction. Thank you, Chuck. That was above and beyond,” the President exclaimed. “That’s the way I’m going to be with you, too. And it’s a great honor to address America’s heroes on this most sol- emn occasion.”
The 36th annual National Peace Officers Memorial Service attracted nearly 30,000 people to the West Front of the U.S. Capitol, including families of the 234 law en- forcement officers who gave their lives in the line of duty during the past year. These officers came from 37 states, Puerto Rico, Guam and five federal and tribal agencies. The event serves as the capstone to National Police Week
On May 15, 1982, the Fraternal Order of Police and its Auxiliary hosted the First National Peace Officers’ Memo- rial Service. The ceremony has become nationally recog- nized and contributed to the building and dedication of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Wall of Remembrance at Judiciary Square in Washington, D.C.
