First Vice President’s Report
Doing the math on promotions
First and foremost, I would like to wish all members and their families a safe, Merry Christ- mas.
During the past few weeks, I, along with oth- er FOP members, have attended many different events that deal with the challenges that we cur- rently face in our profession. The events have ranged from Police Board Hearings to trials at 26th and California to focus groups at Depart-
ment headquarters. The focus groups have been brainstorm- ing sessions that have allowed our fellow Department mem- bers an opportunity to discuss the difficult task of policing within the City of Chicago.
Additionally, I have received numerous phone calls and emails during the past few weeks from members asking questions about the current promotional lists. I have tried to answer all these calls and emails on a daily basis. The City should post each member’s individual score where it could be viewed by the candidate applying to be promoted. The
number for the current sergeant’s list is 352 but this is an es- timate. There may be officers who have retired or, for various reasons, have declined the promotion.
To get an idea of where you stand on the list, take your original score and subtract 352. There may be meritorious promotions between the list number and your score. For ex- ample: If your score was 500, subtract the 352 to make it 148. Now multiply 148 by .30 (merit) which equals 45. Now take 148 and add it to 45, which equals 193. That would be your approximate position on the sergeant’s promotion list.
Your position on the detective list is figured the same way. Take your original score of 500 and subtract 229, which is the current detective list number. That leaves you with 271. Now multiply 271 by .20 (merit) which equals 26. Take 271 and add 26, which equals 297. That becomes your new position on the Detective list.
If you need my help figuring your position on either list, givemeacallattheFOP.d
