Financial Secretary’s Report
The only bad question is the one that isn’t asked
Good day to all. I hope this March brings better weather and healthy times. I have seen quite a few people catching colds and the flu this time of the season, so take precautions.
A Grievance Committee meeting was held Feb. 21, with the following results: The committee rec- ommended withdrawal of five grievances, includ- ing some for officers who showed up to further ex- plain their grievances. The committee heard their presentations but, unfortunately, they were not
complete enough to go on to full arbitration. We explain to offi- cers the full facts of the grievance and, usually, they understand the decision of the committee.
The committee decided to go forward with 10 grievances, including one that was previously deferred pending additional paperwork; in that case, the officer found the paperwork that we needed in order to pursue the grievance. There were no grievances deferred this month.
On to a little bad news: The Lodge will not be having a St. Pat- rick’s Day party this year. This is a disappointment for many of the visitors who have enjoyed themselves at previous parties.
Speaking of St. Patrick’s Day, there will be one trolley with FOP representation for the North Side parade, and one trolley
for the South Side parade. It is usually a good time for all.
Next, I have been getting a lot of input from the unit reps in the districts informing me about all the occurrences happen- ing out there that they have questions about. Because of their questions, I was able to clear up conflicts in their units without having to examine the paperwork, which sometimes takes a bit
of time to resolve.
Checking in with the troops
President Graham and I went to the 11th District to discuss current events and inform the troops. Frank Quinn also came with me to talk about happenings on the first watch in the 006 District. One of the things I really like to do is go into the field and make sure that everyone is informed to the extent possible.
We realize that officers are sometimes too busy with multiple jobs and family matters to reserve time to go to general meet- ings. We try to keep you informed in our magazine, but when of- ficers have a representative right in front of them, they feel more confident in the information that is given, plus the opportunity is there to ask questions.
Finally, if you need to ask a question or something doesn’t seem right, call the Lodge; the only bad question is the one that isn’t asked.
Stay safe.
