THIS PRESS RELEASE WAS ISSUED BY THE PRESIDENTS OF CHICAGO LODGE #7 AND CHICAGO FIREFIGHTERS UNION LOCAL 2 FOLLOWING THE
CITY COUNCIL BUDGET MEETING THAT TOOK PLACE ON SEPT. 22
Together our organizations represent nearly 25,000 active and retired Firefighters, Paramedics and Police Officers. Each of our members chose careers involving the dangers of fighting fires, rescuing citizens, providing vital emergency medical services, patrolling the streets and the risks associated with addressing the ever-growing concerns of combating crime. Our memberships’ collective efforts work to keep this city safe and make it a place that we are proud to call home.
Although the 2016 Budget involves an increase in property taxes, it goes a long way toward making sure that our retirees have the financial security that they were originally promised and certainly deserve. When it comes to taxes, we are not unlike any other citizen of the city and agree that no one enjoys tax increases.
But in this particular instance, when our pension systems are so very underfunded, this dedicated source of monetary contributions is an overdue and necessary start to ensuring that the pension security pledge made to our current and retired members is fulfilled. This is the first step toward making good on those pledges, while permitting us to continue our high level of services to the citizens of Chicago, which they deserve and expect. d
