“I knew I had 20 people that were gonna laugh. The rest of you I didn’t care about,” he deadpanned.
His material is well-known to him because it came from his work back in the days where officers didn’t have partners or a radio in the car with them.
“Oh, I didn’t prepare,” he explained. “At my age, you can’t prepare because you’ll forget. I’m an old man.”
A self-proclaimed “failed comedian,” Pococha genuinely worried
about bombing his performance. Not out of personal embarrass- ment, but because people spent their money to attend the show and support the 100 Club. He felt reassured by the crowd’s response, which was supportive, but didn’t placate with pity laughs.
“I made people laugh and everyone went home thinking police aren’t just what we see on TV,” he explained. “There were a lot of funny police officers up there tonight. It was an honor to be a part of it.”d
