Remembering a life taken, not given
On Feb. 13, we marked the one-year anniversa- ry of Commander Paul Bauer’s murder. As I stated clearly at his funeral Mass, Paul’s life wasn’t “given,” as so many outlets stated;
As Election Day nears, I am also praying for new po- lice-friendly leadership in the ward where I live. If you happen to also live in the 33rd Ward, you’ll undoubt- edly agree with your neighbors that change is sorely
      it was taken. It was stolen from his fam- ily and from us by a four-time convicted felon who never should have been on the street.
The name of Paul’s murderer will be forgotten over time. But Paul Bauer’s name, his wife Erin, his daughter Grace, and his rich legacy will always be remembered.
Memorial cards from Paul’s funeral (and all of our recent LOD funerals) are available for download from our website (chicagopcm.org). If you’d like one mailed to you, just let me know; my contact info is at the end of this article.
needed. Please remember to vote on Feb. 26! Conversely, if you live in the 19th Ward, then you know that your alderman, Matt O’Shea, is a great friend of the police. He sits on the board of directors of the Police Chaplains Ministry. The folks in the 19th Ward are blessed to have Alderman Matt O’Shea represent them, and
we need to ensure he remains in office.
A Suicide Awareness and Prevention Seminar will be held
on Thursday, Feb. 21 in Oak Brook. It is being hosted by the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation, whom you can contact for further information.
Ash Wednesday is March 6. In keeping with time-honored tradition, Department chaplains will distribute blessed ashes at various locations throughout the city. The schedule will be posted in the daily bulletin and on our website.
God bless you and your family!

CORNER
    Between four line-of-duty deaths and a handful of suicides, 2018 was a tough year for the CPD. I continue to pray that 2019 is a better year for our department.
I’m not alone in that prayer: we continue to celebrate Blue Masses, most recently at St. Barnabas in Beverly. Thank you to our host parishes, the Emerald Society, the Pipes and Drums of CPD, the CPD Honor Guard, and all officers/retirees/fam- ilies present at each Mass. Let us continue to pray for each other, and for peace in our city and nation!

Moral of the story: Don’t discard the gift just because it didn’t come gift-wrapped like you expected.
On behalf of all the chaplains, may G-d bless you and keep you safe. Should you need a shoulder to lean on, an ear to lis- ten, or perhaps have some good humor to share, don’t hesitate to give us a call.
