players with a late July camp at Little Cubs Field on North Sacramento Avenue. About 30 players, ages 8 to 14, took part in the event that featured Knights players and two spe- cial guests who shared their skills from years of college and professional playing experience.
On the field, similar to the Finest, the Knights jumped right into game action without any true practice time or much conditioning other than the workouts players got from long hours helping at the food pantry. Still, the Knights have shaken off the rust to be gamers in Midwest Suburban League action.
“We went straight into playing games at the end of April, but it was an even playing field,” Acevedo said of all the teams in the league.
The Knights are set to take on CFD Bravest in a charity game on Aug. 15 at Impact Field in Rosemont, home of the Chicago Dogs. The independent league team reopened the stadium earlier this summer with limited-capacity crowds and other safety-first guidelines, which created an oppor- tunity for the Knights and Bravest to meet on the field to raise money for charity. The Knights play in support of the Brotherhood for the Fallen.
Acevedo emphasizes that baseball is secondary for the Knights, especially this year, which means the team is ready and willing to do what it can to support the community.
“I got a whole team ... more than ready to help out,” he said proudly.
Spring training for The Chicago Police Knights Baseball Club included the team volunteering at the Irving Park Community Food Pantry in May.
Getting back on the field for Midwest Suburban League games proved to be a big morale boost for officers playing with the Knights.
