President Trump. Just in case he was on the fence, I wanted him to know where we stood, that the women and men of this de- partment were requesting his help. I think it’s pretty obvious they were probably coming in anyway.
I think the letter triggered the mayor’s text message tirade call- ing me unhinged. The mention of Trump’s name causes her to become totally unhinged. That disgusting verbiage showed the mayor’s true character, that she just isn’t concerned about our members’ safety.
We did meet with the City’s and the Department’s key play- ers, and they are supposed to tender a proposal to get some kind of contract done on some simple points. It’s much less than the main proposal tendered last year. This is specifically a proposal on the three years of retro pay.
6 CHICAGO LODGE 7 ■ AUGUST 2020
They are supposed to put it together by mid-August. But now they are saying that reforms will be attached to that proposal. The mayor said she told us that reforms would be part of any proposal, but that is an outright lie. The only conversation we had was about getting the retro pay off the books immediate- ly. Apparently, they don’t want to have to go to the city council and pitch a financial package without reforms. We will see if they have the cajones to pull that off.
The mayor is almost giftwrapping it for us, fueling our efforts to unify this Lodge. We’re building a movement here. We have re- ceived amazing support through snail mail, emails and phone calls from people who say, “Keep doing what you are doing. We’re behind you.” We’ve had supervisors who aren’t even members of this union reaching out to us, saying they are grateful for the voice. They know we are pushing the needle, and we will contin- ue to push.
