Peaches and Cream was designed to teach the grisaille technique on Oil Painting Expressions, an online oil painting class featuring several different oil teachers and lessons. Note the values of warm gray used in the cream bottle. Because the background is a dark value the cream was painted with darker values, with Highlight value used only for the shine on the glass.
This is the grisaille layer for Peaches and Cream. Grisaille is
a painting where the forms are established with values of gray before color is applied. Because my background is a warm dark green, the grays must be warm to sit well on it. Mix your own black with French Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Umber. Leaning a little heavier on Burnt Umber makes warm black and, therefore, warm grays. More blue would make cool black and cool grays. A Gray Scale and Value Finder Chart is a great painter’s aid for studying value.
