President’s Letter
Dear fellow SDP members,
Who would have ever thought
that a teapot painted with daisies and strawberries in a storefront window would lead to a lifelong love of decorative painting? Yes, that teapot I spotted just weeks before my family moved across the United States to Washington state sent me on a mission to learn how to paint.
The rest is history. I didn’t think twice when one of my new neighbors asked if
I wanted to take a tole painting class for
a mom’s night out. Soon after my initial classes, my family moved back across
the country to Pennsylvania where I was introduced to SDP. I became a founding charter member of Penn’s Woods Painters. From then on, having an SDP chapter nearby was the first requirement on my list
when looking for a new place to live – a community where I knew I would always find warm welcomes and ready-made friends who shared the same love for art.
Just like in the 1970s, today there is a renewed interest in painting. One primary focus of the Board of Directors is to use this interest to drive membership. We are a global community of painters and aspiring artists who come together to share ideas, develop skills and participate in a fun, creative environment. We need to invite and engage new painters around the world through our camaraderie, Chapters, and learning opportunities.
Another primary focus of ours is the 45th Annual SDP International Conference & Expo, taking place May 17-20, 2017, at the Ocean Center Convention Center in Daytona Beach, Florida. Excitement abounds for a sunbathed, refreshing venue with both cutting-edge and traditional art classes taught by the industry’s best artists. Chapters and members up and down the East Coast – me included – are thrilled to share the sun-drenched shores, fresh, salty air and artistic opportunities found in Daytona Beach. Start saving now so that you and your family and friends can join us in this affordable destination for four days of painting, shopping, creativity and fun!
SDP has been my lifeline for more than 30 years. Let’s welcome new members into our community and ensure they feel the same way as I do.
Sincerely,
Kathy Swigon cda
SDP President, 2016-2017
