74 The Decorative Painter • ISSUE NO. 3, 2016
Welcome to a wonderful adventure with a fun painting medium – alcohol ink! This is such a great product and you can do so many things with it. If you are so in-
clined you can do abstract renderings or paint flowers, landscapes, animals, or a myriad of other subjects. I find that I enjoy playing in the ink when I need to loosen up from my realism oil paintings. Abstract can be very relaxing!
Since this is the holiday edition I have included a poinset- tia design that will make a great gift, as will tiles with the other designs. Even if you use the same palette, everyone’s gift will be one of a kind!
PREPARATION
Cover your table with heavy paper or plastic.
Set out the paints you will need, the Tim Holtz Adirondack Alcohol Blending Solution, brushes, tiles, applicator stamp, felt, scissors, Dust-Off Electronics Duster, small containers, gloves, and paper towels. Put on gloves.
LET’S PAINT
I am using 4" tiles for the designs. It is an inexpensive way to try out color schemes as well as techniques. If you don’t like what happened then just remove it with alcohol and a paper towel and start over!
Paint the edges and back with Lamp (Ebony) Black. Protect with several light coats of Rust-oleum Painter’s Touch 2X Ultra Cover Gloss Varnish or you may use brush-on varnish. This is easier to do before you paint the face of the tile. Clean off any black on the face of the tile with alcohol.
