ACRYLIC
LIGHTHOUSE
Basecoat the tower with Light French Blue.
Basecoat the underside of the cone-shaped roof and the outside of the lookout room with Autumn Red.
Basecoat the lens with Camel.
Float shading across the bottom of the lens with Milk Chocolate.
Using Black Plum, float shading across the bottom half of the lookout room and over the underside of the roof. This is just a shade and should not completely cover up the basecoat.
To achieve the crackle effect on the tower, apply De- coArt Americana Weathered Wood according to the man- ufacturer’s instructions. Let dry, then apply a topcoat of Bleached Sand. When dry, corner-load the 5⁄8" angular with Light French Blue and float a wide shade down the left and right sides of the tower.
With the no. 0 liner and Autumn Red, create the walk- way base. With Black Plum on the no. 0 shader, shade the left and right undersides of the walkway base. Using the no. 0 liner and Black Plum, create the lines that separate the lens room panes, walkway rail, and supports.
WINDOWS AND DOOR
Basecoat each window and door with the appropriate size shader.
Basecoat the dark windows and the door (in Struc- ture 9) with Deep Midnight Blue.
Basecoat the yellow windows with Camel. Corner- load the 5⁄8" angular with Milk Chocolate and float shading across the top of the yellow windows.
Basecoat the curtains of Structure 10 with one coat of Snow White. Then use the no. 0 liner and Deep Midnight Blue to outline the window and create the lines that sepa- rate the panes.
ROOFS
Basecoat all the roofs with Snow White, using the ap- propriate size shader.
Corner-load the 5⁄8" angular with Deep Midnight Blue, and lightly float a shade across the top of each roof. Dou- ble-load the no. 0 liner with Deep Midnight Blue and Snow White, and pull the side rooflines.
Repeat this step with Snow White to highlight the side rooflines. Using the no. 5/0 liner and Snow White, ran- domly pull the icicles down from the roofs’ edges.
Corner-load the 5⁄8" angular with Snow White and float smoke coming out of the chimneys.
Double-load a stylus with Autumn Red and Black Plum, and create the ventilator ball by placing a dip-dot at the top of the lighthouse roof.
Double-load the no. 5/0 liner with Autumn Red and Black Plum and create the lightning rod by pulling a line up from the dip-dot.
With the small Texture Brush and Snow White, add piles of snow on top of the watch room and along the walkway base.
GROUND SNOW
Corner-load the 5⁄8" angular with Snow White and ran- domly chisel-float more snow across the top of each snow hill and down into the hill areas. To chisel-float, corner- load the angular, then use the palette to work the color into the brush. Lay the bristles flat on the surface, chisel edge up. Using the front of the bristles, push the paint from left to right in a scratching motion, pulling a broken line that is slightly floated.
PINES
To create the snow hill pines, repeat the steps in Back- ground Horizon Pines, using Black Green on the no. 8 fil- bert. Refer to the photo of the finished piece for placement.
Corner-load the 5⁄8" angular with Snow White and chis- el-float more snow under the pines.
SHRUBS AND GROUND FOLIAGE
With Evergreen on the appropriate size Texture Brush, “dance in” the shrubs and ground foliage, referring to the finished piece. With Snow White on the tip of the Texture Brush, lightly and randomly create snow on the shrubs and foliage. Create shrubs on the edges of the canvas near Structure 10. Notice that they cover the structure a bit.
Corner-load the 5⁄8" angular with Snow White, and chisel-float more snow under the shrubs and foliage.
WINDOW TINTS
If needed, lightly dampen the surface areas first before applying the tints. Using the no. 8 shader, lightly wash water-thinned Camel on the snow areas directly under the yellow windows, inside the lens room, and to the left and right of the lens room.
FINISHING
With the spattering tool and water-thinned Snow White, spatter snow over the entire canvas. Let dry. Use the Combo Oval Wash brush to apply DecoArt DuraClear Matte Varnish to the entire canvas, including all four sides. This brush doesn’t leave any brushstroke marks after the varnish has dried.
