While walking through the Denver Botanic Gar- dens, I took pictures of flowers that were at their prime. Many artists consider their camera their
best friend. Photographs of beautiful moments serve as an inspiration for many creative endeavors. With the advance of technology, many photographs can help artists share their interpretation in a painting. The process can be very simple. I hope this project will inspire you to become the artist you are meant to be.
PREPARATION
Trace the design onto tracing paper, then transfer it to the surface with dark graphite.
LET’S PAINT
FLOWER PETALS
Keeping in mind the chosen light source, begin with the petals around the center of the flower. Refer to the line drawing for value change indications. The petals in the upper left will have the lightest values to create form. Any petals on the right and those on the back plane will tend to have darker values. Lay in the values and blend.
All streaked marks should radiate toward the center of the flower.
FLOWER CENTER
Fill in the center with a mottled application of Raw Sienna. With a liner, add textural effects with Cadmium Yellow Medium. Add additional markings with Cadmium Red Medium and a green made from Cadmium Yellow Medium+French Ultramarine Blue.
BACKGROUND
Create a dark green mix of French Ultramarine Blue+Ivory Black+tch Cadmium Yellow Medium. Lay in a mottled background around the flower. After painting the background, you may have to reevaluate some of the val- ues used on the background petals. Apply stronger darks and lights to petals to complete the desired effect of an up- per left-hand light source.
FINISHING
Let the surface dry. Apply at least two coats of varnish, letting dry between coats.
