President’s Letter
Every year we start out with a fresh, enthusiastic outlook
on life. We make those resolutions to change, improve or begin anew. We look forward to the slowed pace of the winter months when we can enjoy winter’s wonders from the warmth of inside.
Sometimes our resolutions result in starting a new routine, which may in itself cause stress. Beyond the possible stress, there are benefits to having a good daily schedule. It helps to provide structure, making us more efficient while giving us the momentum to complete tasks and maybe, just maybe, free up
time. It gives us a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment.
The key to making all this work for our benefit is prioritizing. Once those items are off the to-do list, we need to make sure that we have
also allowed time to do what we love most, including painting and time with family and friends. Those are important moments for us and if we don’t prioritize the time we will end up with a stale routine! Does your resolution and routine allow creative time? I hope you have made signing up for the Back to the Beach, the Society’s annual conference and expo,
a part of your priority list. It is a perfect setting to renew, enhance and challenge your creative skills while enjoying the company of friends.
At the SDP office, the new year brings a new business year with a number of new and exciting plans. The Wichita staff of four handles a lot of the day-to-day frontline action. We have adopted a strategic plan that relies more heavily on our committees while providing them a specific focus and exciting goals to accomplish. Some of the committees will need additional members to carry out their tasks. Get involved and join a committee! We also will be working with chapters through the Chapters Committee to ensure that they have tools and information to operate effectively and efficiently.
At the top of SDP’s priority list are actions that make and continue to provide the ultimate experience in decorative art. We want to be there for you when it comes to learning and exploring ways to grow in creativity individually and collectively. As you know, our partnership arrangement with Association For Creative Industries (AFCI, formerly Craft & Hobby Association, CHA) ended December 31, 2017. We thank them for the help they provided in maintaining operations and gathering strength
to work on our long-term commitment to our members, chapters and decorative art. We are pleased that Jennifer Arnold, our Executive Director, is taking a proactive lead.
As you look through this issue of The Decorative Painter, you will see there are proposed changes to the Bylaws and information on the 2018- 2019 nominees for the Board of Directors. We have taken many of your suggestions to heart. The Bylaws Committee has made recommendations that will bring our operation guidelines (the bylaws) into the twenty-first century. Please look at these changes and come to the Annual Meeting in Daytona Beach to ensure your opinion and vote is heard. If you cannot make the meeting in person, please contact me or a board member with your comments and positive input.
Here’s to a fun, stress-free and organized 2018! Artfully yours,
Kaye Singer
SDP President, 2017-2018
