Indian corn (Zea mays indurata) is an American cereal grass also known as maize or flint corn (because of its long-lasting, hard-shelled kernels). The first settlers of the
New World were introduced to multicolored corn by Na- tive Americans. It was a staple in the Indian diet and saved the lives of many starving colonists. The first Thanksgiving was celebrated in appreciation of the kindness of the Na- tive Americans. They had helped the colonists survive the harsh conditions of the wilderness by showing them how to plant and harvest corn.
A bundle of Indian corn is a wonderful subject for an autumn painting. The corn is easy to find, inexpensive, and can be used to decorate almost anything. It adds a splash of rich, earthy autumn colors to any home. A pretty fabric rib- bon tied around the bundle can make it an irresistible paint- ing opportunity. Keep in mind that less is sometimes better when painting in watercolors. Don’t overwork or overthink the techniques, and don’t worry about making your painting look exactly like the original. Take your time, have fun, and enjoy the journey of painting an Indian Harvest.
