grain). There are two areas of reflected color using Grey Sky. See the main photograph and value map for locations. STEP 17: Check for symmetry and adjust as needed. Let dry.
STEP 18: Glaze the far left side of the butter mold. See Steps 8 and 9 of the Bowl – Stage 2 on page 34. Re-establish the reflected color if necessary.
BISCUIT CUTTER
Every value of the biscuit cutter is significantly lighter and bolder than the value of the bowl or butter mold it touches. The color of the wooden handle is closest to Deco- Art’s Hammered Iron. It is no longer in production (when I first painted this, I had a bottle in my stash). It can be approximated with a mixture of Slate Grey and Avocado. The slight green cast to the handle is important to keep it distinct from the browns of the butter mold.
STEP 19: Basecoat metal with Slate Grey. While still wet, shade with Zinc and highlight heavily with Snow (Tita- nium) White. Be bold. The screws or fasteners, the area where the handle connects, and hints of the bent edge are painted with diluted Lamp (Ebony) Black.
STEP 20: Basecoat wooden handle with either Ham- mered Iron or your mixture. Add short curved strokes (woodgrain) of Eggshell on the upper edges and lower corner. Add some curved reflected color along the lower edge with Slate Grey. Texture (more wood grain) is added with diluted Lamp (Ebony) Black. Be sure to keep the lines curved. (See Step 1 on page 33.)
STEP 21: Reinforce the Snow (Titanium) White highlight on the metal. Because it is aluminum and older, there is texture. Pit-pat the paint – do not drag your brush or over- blend. Wash areas of the cutter with Navy Blue and Honey Brown. This marries the cutter to the other pieces in the painting. (See Step 2 on page 33.)
STEP 22: The cutter is lying at an angle. Its outline is not truly symmetric, considering the line of sight. However, its outline should be checked for smooth, curved lines. STEP 23: Adjust shading and highlights to be sure that the three items are not competitive. Sign your name once you are happy.
STEP 24: Protect with multiple coats of DecoArt Dura- Clear Satin Varnish.

artist’s sketch
A friend bought Leslie Smith a painting lesson as a Christmas gift in 1992. He saw an ad at a craft store that said painting could relieve stress. At that time, Leslie was working as a technical advisor for the Sheriff’s EOD (bomb squad), so the gift was well chosen. Leslie has been painting ever since. She taught for many years and participates in local shows. She loves to design and figure out what makes a piece appeal to others. Feel free to reach out to Leslie at laspaints2@gmail.com.
