Door Knob is composed of the knob which is used to open and close a door and the plate which is flat against the door. Shade using a 1⁄2" flat brush between the plate and knob and also on the left side of the knob with Traditional Burnt Sienna. Darken the shading with a brush-mix of Dark Chocolate plus Soft Black. Highlight using a 1⁄2" oval brush and Honey Brown plus True Ochre. Further lighten with a brush-mix of True Ochre plus Warm White. Do not blend away the highlights as this is a metal surface and the shading and highlighting are sharper in contrast to the soft shading of the ice skates. Tint the bottom of the knob with Slate Grey.
Laces are basecoated with a #4 flat brush and Warm
White. They are then softly shaded where the laces cross or behind the knots with Warm White plus Soft Black. Very thin outlining with Soft Black could be added in a few spots to get the laces to show up a bit more against the background. Add a few cast shadows of the laces with a brush-mix of Soft Black plus Dark Chocolate.
Enhance the shadows on the vertical door trim by adding blue tints and softening these stripes with combinations of Deep Midnight Blue plus Slate Grey or with Sapphire. Also, soften the cast shadows at the outer edges with brush-mixes of White Peach plus Warm White or Slate Grey. If necessary darken the shadows which are behind the skates with Soft Black plus Deep Midnight Blue. Make sure that all of these shadows run together and are the same value beneath the skates. The vertical door trim shadow should not show up separately from the cast shadows of the ice skates.
Finish with DecoArt Spray Gloss Varnish.
Patty Stouffer was introduced to decorative painting in 1984. She has had the pleasure of teaching all over the USA at many chapters, regional conventions and SDP conventions. Although all of Patty’s designs are done in acrylic she has an oil background as well. This contributes to her looser and more
impressionistic style of painting. Most of her designs are done from actual setups, photos, or are painted en plein air. She strives to convey the same sense of immediacy and emotion that she felt while either painting the scene or taking the photo.
