86 The Decorative Painter • ISSUE NO. 2, 2014
Every spring I purchase a basket of pansies; these col- orful flowers are among my favorites. I try to choose a different assortment of colors and styles to photograph
and paint from each year. As you can tell from this paint- ing, the purple varieties rank at the top of my preferences.
PREPARATION
I used the calendar insert because I like changeable surfaces. You could paint this design on any surface of similar size. Basecoat the surface with DecoArt Multi-Purpose Sealer+Violet Haze using the dense sponge or sponge brush. Apply a second coat of pure Violet Haze. When the paint is dry, mist the surface with DecoArt Americana Sealer/Fin- isher. Transfer the design onto tracing paper.
BACKGROUND
Because this process can get messy, I suggest you wear rubber gloves. Use a soft rag, such as a piece of old T-shirt, to do the roughing. To speed up the drying time of the back- ground, add a drop of Japan drier to the Titanium White paint.
Scoop up generous amounts of paint, in the following order, on the underside of your palette knife and scrape the paint onto your surface in the areas indicated in Step 1. Apply lots of Titanium White in the center and in any other areas you want to lighten. Apply Dioxazine Purple around the white and on the left side of the surface. Apply French Ultramarine Blue heaviest on the right, and scattered elsewhere. The more Titanium White you use, the lighter your background will be.
