Brush Basics adapted from the SDP Teacher Development Program Manual. (Brush and stroke illustrations by Maureen McNaughton Gourzong cda, tda.)
 Basic Strokes
C-STROKE (Crescent Stroke): A stroke done with a flat, filbert, round, or liner brush. It forms a C-shape that is tapered at both ends and wider in the middle. Pressure is gradually applied and then released to form the stroke.
(flat brush) (filbert) (round) (liner)
COMMA-STROKE (Tole Stroke, Daisy Stroke, Polliwog Stroke): A comma-shaped stroke created with one stroke of a round, filbert, flat, or liner brush. Resulting stroke shape will vary depending on the type of brush used. Pressure is applied and then gradually released as the brush is pulled from the head to the tail.
(filbert) (round) (liner)
S-STROKE: An S-shaped stroke created by gradually applying and then releasing pressure. It is tapered at both ends and wide in the middle with a gentle or exaggerated curve. May be done with a flat, filbert, round, or liner brush.
(flat brush) (filbert) (round) (liner)
TEARDROP STROKE (SITDOWN STROKE): Done with a round brush, the stroke begins with a point. Pressure is gradually applied until the stroke is the desired length. The brush is then lifted leaving a rounded head on the stroke.
